Welcome back to another geek craft fun filled week! This time we talk to HauteMess. Not only do they have an awesome name, they make some amazing aprons, among other fabulous items that you can see in the preview photo. Want to cook while dressed up like R2D2? Check out the full article to learn more.

Can you start off by telling us a bit about yourself and what you do?

I have always felt that expressing yourself via the clothing you wear was a great reflection of things you like and things that make you feel good no matter what you are doing. I created a line of disney/ geek inspired aprons and just fabrics that I find beautiful and obnoxiously bold and took that inspiration and translated it into something that you can wear on a daily basis. I call it Kitchen Couture I mean cause even if all you are doing is cooking and cleaning atleast you can look fabulous doing so. I started this business 8 months ago and I fully operate, design , and sew everything by myself.

Are you a self taught seamstress or did you learn form someone?

I pretty much just bought a sewing maching and went to town. I had no formal training or any idea really what I was doing and a month later I started my business. I think thats the key to anything you do is to just do it. Just recently within the past few months started taking private sewing classes with a woman named Susan Gredner who studied with Patti Palmer of Mc Call’s patterns and she is teaching me various sewing techniques. She is an amazing instructor and very passionate about teaching and its helping me with a behind the scenes project I am currently working on.

Your geek inspired aprons are great. how did you come up with the idea?

Its something that everyone is drawn to Geek or not and it just felt right.
The idea itself was really a no brainer with the popularity of the designs I chose but the actual execution was a different story. I had 3 days to design and sew for my latest line geek chic before I hightailed it to florida for a photo shoot, with my model Nicole Brown and my photographer Wayfaring Wanderer. I pretty much worked non stop to have those items completed. It was a very intense time for me because I was working with some materials I have never used before and the creative process always take so much longer in the begining. Alot of thought goes into what I do. The color combinations, the placement of various pieces- Love is in the details.

How long does it take to make an apron usually?

A few hours depending on the piece. I make all my own materials. The bows, the lining. The prices of my aprons reflect the cost of material and work that goes into each piece. I think the most time consuming one is the r2d2 apron it can take up to 4 to complete. It probably doesn’t help that I am a perfectionist and things that the average person might overlook will stick out to me so I like to take my time and make sure everything is neat and pretty. Anything less, or sloppy would take me longer. I would rather contact someone and say hey I am running behind schedule then to ever send anything out there that isn’t to my greatest ability.

Do you take custom orders?

Some of my greatest work has been created by people who contacted me with ideas and I absolutely love the challenge of bringing it to life. One of my favorites, the wonder woman was made this way. So I very much welcome any project. If they like frogs I will give them frogs. I have spent a countless amount of hours looking at fabrics so if it exists I will find it. I absolutely love what I do and I think the most beautiful thing in the world is when someone says I am surprising my wife with this, or I am buying this Harry Potter apron to cook dinner in for my boyfriend. I have recently been published in a national magazine, but nothing feels more magical than all the lil stories I hear.

You have a few different products in your shop, do you have anything new in the works?

Yes I do. I am working right now to design my first clothing line. Something very pin up with an edge. It will be a very classic looking collection made from strange fabrics. Circus meets tim burton with a lil bit of zombie. I love dresses and I love things that are weird so it’s going to be a pretty odd.

Thanks so much to HauteMess for taking the time to answer our questions. I cannot wait to see the upcoming clothing line. It sounds incredible and up so many people’s alley. Good luck with everything! Make sure you check out HauteMess’s shop and start cooking geek style.

We had a little break from Geek Craft and GEN in general but we are back baby! Our first Geek Craft article focuses on the adorable shop Spaztazm. The owner of the shop has found a new way to showcase your favorite mario character from your ears. They are very clever. Plus, all her clay creations have a kawaii look that many of us can’t resist.

Can you give us some background on yourself and what you do?

Well, My Name is Allyse, Pronounced uh-lease I’m 24, Grew up in the New England area, Moved south and met my sons father, my son is now 2 and a half, and is my life. We recently moved back to the New England area and are enjoying spending time with my family.
I’ve ALWAYS had a love for arts and crafts, drawing, and sculpting as a kid, Silly as it is I actually failed basic art in high school because it bored me, I had more fun doing my own thing and helping classmates with their work. I’ve never taken any classes or anything for what I do, its all self taught and natural talent, passed down from both my mother and father, my fathers always doodling something, and when I was a kid my mother used to make custom cakes, and is now a Seamstress. My shop was Featured on G4 Attack of the show on Valentines day this year (2012) that was an amazing surprise that I will Always feel so proud of.

How long have you been working with clay?

As a kid I always played with modeling clay, and play dough, around 13 years old my mother got me some of that crayola model magic, and she saw I had a natural talent, and got me into using polymer clay, so its been a life long passion to sculpt, but I’ve been using Polymer clay for over 10 years.

How long does it take you to make most of your items?

Some of my items can take any where from 10 minutes to well over an hour, the more detail, the larger (or smaller) the longer it takes. Id guess the longest time frame on items in my shop, would probably be the piranha plants on Average they take me about 45 minutes per pair, not including bake time.

What is your favorite thing to make that you have in your store?

I LOVE making my own unique goth/alternative chibi charms, I also love making totoro, and gamer things, its hard to pick just one favorite, I love what I do, and I’m grateful that I can make things I love to make and share them with others for a living.

What is your son’s favorite item that you make?

My son loves when I make Mario items. hes only 2 and a half, but has a deep love for Mario and yoshi, when ever I’m working, I always have to give him some of my clay, he calls it “mumma’s mushy”, he likes making snakes and making them hiss and scare any one who happens to be around with them, I hope he grows up and enjoys sculpting like I do.

Do you take custom orders?

I do, I’m always up for making custom items, or even just changing colors of some items. Some of the coolest things I’ve made were custom items, including custom ordered True blood Chibi charms, that some of the cast actually got to see and even touch, The woman who requested them had worn them as a necklace when she got to go on set and meet them, which made my year, because I’m a huge true blood fan.

Do you have any new designs coming out we can look forward to?

I’ve constantly got ideas for things going through my head. I always say I wish I had been born a triplet, because 4 more hands as crafty of mine would help so much. I hope to have more anime themed items in the future. I post new items on my facebook page along with promo coupon codes and offers. Feel free to check the page out and like it here.

Thank you so much to Allyse for taking time out of her busy crafting schedule to answer our questions. It sounds like we can expect to see more adorable chibi items from Spaztazm in the future and we encourage you all to go check out her shop. Allyse was also nice enough to do a promo code just for our readers. If you put the code GENRULEZ in before you checkout, you’ll receive 10% off your order! Woohoo!

Hey guys! Sorry it’s been so long, I’ve just been swamped getting ready for SDCC. Which, I’ll probably leave this feature up until after Comic Con, then I’ll get back on track! Again, sorry guys and thanks for your patience.

Good morning fellow GEN-ers! This week our features takes us to the sweetheart known on the web as Heatherling! I originally approached her because I’m fond of her Amber cosplay! Love it!

Tell us a little about yourself, what got you into cosplaying?

I was interested in cosplay long before I finally got into it myself. Like many others, my first anime was Sailor Moon and my cousin and I were crazy about it. We’d spend countless hours searching for pictures from the show and eventually found people in costumes! Years later, a friend of a friend told me about SakuraCon and it wasn’t until a few more years after that, that I finally attended my first convention. My first convention and cosplay experience ever was San Diego Comic Con 2008! Boy, oh boy…I had no idea what to expect. My friend (Illiara) has a Faye Valentine (Cowboy Bebop) and a Mirielle Bouquet (Noir) costume, and asked me to accompany her as Ed and Kirika! Both were one-time costumes and put together very quickly, but finally got me on board the cosplay train.

What is your favorite character that you cosplay?

Thats a tough question….Sakura (Street Fighter) is my baby because it was my first constructed costume and it’s fun to get action shots. It’s the most recognizable and I’ve brought her to every convention ‘just in case.’ Amber (Sucker Punch) is my most complicated costume. I got so confused during the construction with all of the pieces I had to cut out. Anytime I took a break, I had to take time to figure out which pieces went together. I’m proud of the work that went into it and actually plan on making it all over again with better fabric and also fixing a few nit-picky areas. Him (Powerpuff Girls) is the newest and very fun to wear! It’s fun to be a villian and to not recognize myself in the mirror.

What has been your most memorable experience while cosplaying?

My most memorable experience is probably Emerald City ComicCon 2011 when I finally met Felicia Day and Amy Okuda in my Tinkerballa (The Guild) costume. They spotted me standing in line and once I got up to their booth, they were both geeking out so much that it wasn’t until after I had walked away from the booth that I realized that I didn’t get a chance to geek out myself! The next day during The Guild’s panel, Felicia brought my costume up, going as far as saying it’s the best Tink she’d seen, “Even better than the one in the video” and I just about died! Best. Day. EVER!

What con’s do you attend?

I love Seattle’s conventions. Emerald City ComiCon, SakuraCon and PAX. I have also attended San Diego ComicCon and Anime Vegas.

Have you ever met the artists of the costumes you create? If so, tell us about it!

The only artists have been Felicia and Amy for my Tinkerballa, so far. I’m hoping to see them again at SDCC this year!

Are there any costumes in the works that we should be on the lookout for?

I haven’t figured out what my next costume will be just yet (it’s time for a crafting break), but a few that I hope to get around to soon are: Chun-Li (Street Fighter), Sun Shang Xiang (Dynasty Warriors), X-23 (X-Men), Tenten (Naruto), and Jasmine (Aladdin). And many others! Do be on the lookout for a new bow for Tinkerballa and an updated Amber by SDCC, though!

I do my own makeup, even though I’m pretty awful with it. I’m learning (very slowly..). I’m hoping that someday it won’t take me half an hour to apply a bit of eyeliner and shadow! I mostly work with Jerry Polence, Eurobeat King and Mike (fiance).

Thank you so much for your time! I hope we get to meet at SDCC this year! And happy cosplaying.

Jealous of all the people on Geek Craft have mad crafting skills? Well this week might make you feel better because Weelittlestitches has awesome patterns for you to start crafting in the best geeky way possible. Check out all the patterns they have and see how you can use their items to inexpensively become a geek crafter!

Can you tell us a little about how weelittlestitches came to be?
It’s sort of a long and convoluted story really! I’ve always been crafty – I was raised that way – and I know how to knit, embroider, crochet, scrapbook, sew, and of course, cross-stitch. My mother taught me most of that stuff when I was a kid (probably to get me to sit still and be quiet for longer than five minutes at a time!) but until recently none of it really caught my interest. I’d start project after project and rarely finish them. Cross-stitch in particular was frustrating because I love the look of big, complicated designs, but just don’t have the patience to finish them – I can’t tell you how many half-completed designs are stashed under my bed! It was really the internet that helped me to see cross-stitch as something which didn’t have to be so frustratingly time-consuming – I stumbled across pieces being done using old 8-bit video game sprites and loved it… little Mario Brothers or Zelda-inspired cross-stitchings were not only more to my personal taste than teddy bears and Victorian ladies (and all those other “typical” cross-stitch designs) but they were cute, quick to stitch, and so nostalgic. It was after I began stitching those old video game sprites that my husband actually began to pay attention to my crafting too – and eventually he asked me to teach him how to cross-stitch. I did, and he and I have been stitching together ever since. We began designing our own patterns simply because there were so many franchises we wanted to see cross-stitched but for which there weren’t any 8-bit sprites FOR – not just video games, but movies, and television shows, and comic books… the business really just was a natural extension of what we were already doing – creating patterns which were homages to the wonderful, geeky characters we love.

How long does it take to make a pattern?
Really it depends – we work on patterns together usually, one of us doing the initial designing, and then the other coming in to suggest changes and help tweak the final product. It can take anywhere from a few hours to a few weeks, depending on how particular we want to be and how complicated the characters are. The Star Wars patterns took us nearly 3 months only because we wanted them to be perfect!! Plus, C3PO was a pain to get right!

Do you take custom orders or sell any cross stitched images already done by yourselves?
We do encourage people to make suggestions for franchises which they’d like to see patterns of – we have quite a “to-do” list of patterns! It’s always a challenge to decide what to design next. And then part of our business is making custom Pixel People of real people – family portraits and the like from photos and descriptions provided by the customer – those are available in the shop both as patterns (if you want to stitch it yourself) and as finished pieces. You can also order pretty much any pattern in the shop as a finished piece if you’re not a cross-stitcher yourself. Really though we want to encourage people to learn the craft – it’s quick and fun and easy! I love when customers purchase a pattern and they don’t know how to cross-stitch – it’s a fantastic hobby (and an inexpensive one). It’s pretty much a guarantee that someone you know can teach you how to cross-stitch and if not the internet has tons of resources for the beginning stitcher. Plus, all our patterns include cross-stitching tips and we always welcome questions!

What is your favorite pattern?
I have a soft spot for the Eleven Doctors pattern — it was one of the first I designed and I love, love, love Doctor Who! Doing the research for that pattern was fun – some of the outfits the old Doctors wore were just ridiculous! I think they translated really well into Pixel People. My hubby has also become a fanastic designer – the comic book Pixel People patterns are all done by him – I love his Batman patterns – they’re the best he’s done yet and it makes me so proud! He’s embraced this enterprise wholeheartedly.

Have you ever thought about implementing your designs into other products such as shirts or stickers?
We have talked about getting in to t-shirts and other apparel – especially for kids – but haven’t yet begun sourcing out that option. For now we really want to focus on the heart of our business — making patterns! There are so many franchises we want to design Pixel People for and so few hours in the day. Luckily cross-stitching is a really flexible craft – you can stitch on just about anything, so if customers are in need of a Pixel People t-shirt they can always stitch their own!

It seems you com out with new patterns pretty often. Is there somewhere people can follow you get updates?
The best place to stay updated with us is by ‘liking’ us on Facebook – we’re pretty active there. Our Facebook page is where we communicate first, and we encourage our customers to post pictures of their finished pieces and leave feedback and suggestions there too. The best thing about this business is that we’ve gotten to know and befriend customers from all over the world. We’re also on Twitter (@weelittlestitch) – and I’m not one of those who tweets a thousand times a day, so you’re safe following us! We have a slightly neglected blog too where we post free patterns, Etsy finds, and geeky sorts of inspiration.

You have so many patterns to choose from that are so amazing! I would have to pick the Eleven Doctors as a favrotie as well though. But then there is Harry Potter, Ghostbusters, The Justice League and Star Wars! You are killing me smalls! I need to get better at cross stitching so I can collect them all. Make sure to check out WeelittleStithes shop and facebook for updates. Thanks so much and we can’t wait to see what else Weelittlestitches’ genius minds come up with.

It’s E3 time again so everything on the internet is videogame related this week. That includes Geek Craft. This week we focus on StranglandOutfitter. A dynamic duo that make many videogame and other geek related goodies and give us a small taste of their adorable personalities.

Can you tell us about all the different crafts you make?Love to, and O you couldn’t have found two masked foes of the “indie craft scene” (lol) more willing to talk about themselves and all the evil doings that they do do. Hyderya has been formally trained as a craftsman and technition of all arts since the tender age of six years. This began as many of his many of his early days were spent getting schooled by his ‘mountain-of-a-man’ Grandpapa. These skills took him all the way through mastering the culinary arts later in life (epic worthless degree) then to forming is own custom electronics company in the beginning of 2007. This failed endeavor with electronics would later leave this villain homeless. After three years of searching far and wide, Hyderya found himself in the Strangeland where his skill set granted him the ability to rule over all of the land and forge any object into relation with his bare metal fingertips. Objects and mediums such as: (but not limited to)
~die-cast mechanized machines
~various custom programed devices with handmade housings
~Cartoon-y parodies of icons from various Strangelands/Fantasy worlds (i.e. like our Bioshock magnets: cute and fluffy versions of something dark and meaningful.)
~Clothing and general souvenirs that you would find straight out of the pages of a great novel. (A Waitress’s apron from the Chestnut tree cafe in 1984 or Winston’s tin cup or doll razors)
Being that we are a mercenary team, all of our crafts can cost a lot of gold or could even set somebody back a couple of paychecks. More than likely, their order will take FOREVER for us to translate it from the fantasy world into reality. But we have yet to disappoint any client, almost all of those are repeat contract holders.

What got you started making all this awesome stuff?
As we said before, Hyderya has spent almost his entire life being trained to work with his hands and be able to harness the potential of any medium available. All of this training and building up of dexterity was first truly put to use with his short-lived Custom Electronics business. Turns out, that villain was barking up the wrong tree. It did push his skills to new levels, but it was this business venture that left him Lair-less. The next step was seeking a new base of operations. Posing as a Vintage Clothing Store in a old historic downtown/residential area on the outskirts of a suburb. Within our new base of operations, we dug ourselves out a nice slice of purgatory to hash out our mad campaigns and future failings. After too many days of “I’ll get you next time!” we fleshed out a plan to end all past lame ways. From that day forward, we destroyed any chance at letting our alter egos have a say in the destiny of these two villains. With this decision, we made our services available to the world at large for a cost. We still have yet to have any success in the United States…

What is your favorite craft to make?
Our favorite projects to make are the most complicated, contain the rarest parts, and cost the most either being cash amount or time amount. We love taking our technical backgrounds and stretching them to the extreme to create things that should not exist. And we also have a soft spot for creating all those things that the adults tell us are immature but we cannot imagine a world without them being real. I.E my full sized, fully functioning Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Party Wagon! Don’t have this yet, but it needs to be made. lol. But seriously, we cannot wait for the day when we get contracted to make a real-to-life, fully functioning, reloadable Lancer Assault Rifle from Gears of War or some other beautiful design that is supposed trapped in the fantasy world.

Do you take custom orders?
Hell Yess we do! We’re two real-world experienced madvillainous mercenary artisans, with over sixteen years combined experience. We absolutely pay our rent every month with custom orders from friends on Facebook. And truth be told, most of our clients i.e contract holders end up being more creative than the evil super brains of these two villains. About 85% of our store stock is based off of designs and requests from our contract holders. We have designs and ideas of our own but we are not the contract holder, we are freelance artists to the world at large.

Do you have anything new in the works from other video games?
Great Oogly Moogly Jesus Yes! Way too many to mention all of them, and we try to keep new contracts “hush-hush” until we are positive that the transition from fantasy to reality will go smoothly.

Not to leave you hanging or give you a fluff answer.
Here’s a small handful of what we think will be pretty cool additions to our Strangeland in the upcoming months:
~Full sized Nuka Cola Quantum Den Lamp {(Constructed entirely with period parts! Approximately 2-3 feet in total height.) I know it’s just another Fallout item, but if we all haven’t lost around 160 hours scouring the wasteland for this crap, I don’t think the real life demand for real props or souvenirs would be that high.} lol
~A Real-To-Life Solid Snake Cosplay costume complete with metal Big Boss cigarette case
~A laundry list of potential Skyrim props
~and finally, a little too soon to go in depth with, but the games we intend to focus on for this year are Portal 2, Skyrim, Arkham City, Brink, and Dead Island. We know there’s a bunch of other great games coming out and a bunch from last year that we missed, but we already know that these are the games that really stand out to us. So who knows what we will make real from those!

When you are not making kickass crafts, what other geek activities do you partake in?
Sniff glue, drink lighter fluid, kick puppies- – - nah just kidding! We’re the lame homebody bookworm type of villains. We spend a great deal of our free time either working out, or reading whatever. We walk a couple miles every day and cut through about a book or so a week each (anything from comics, instruction manuals, to vintage medical books, or blogs *wink*wink*)

We haven’t been able to afford cable television for the past five or six years and never really had the interest to install an antenna, so we watch a lot of movies and read a ton of shit. All of this might be ruined now, because we just got Netflix on xbox live, and that’s SWEEEET so far.

We try to go out to lunch together at least once every other day to just walk away from it all, and get caught up as regular people. Like we said, just two masked villains haunting their lair, wringing their fists at the world. lol.

Wow, thank you so much for giving us a detailed account of what drives you and all the awesome things we can look forward to in the future. I will be on the look out for osme Arkham City stuff myself. Please keep in touch and let us know when you have new items. Keep up the ass kicking work. Check out more of StrangeLandOutfitter’s crafts here.

Hello guys! Don’t worry, I’ll have the new feature up tomorrow. (Sorry Heatherling!)

(I’m so sorry, life has totally caught up with me and I’ve been SWAMPED busy for the past few weeks. I’ll get back into the swing of things soon!)

I just had a couple of questions I wanted to ask you all, pertaining to the Corner.

What would you guys like to see more of? A specific type of cosplay i.e. Video Game, Anime, Comic Book, Movie/Random pop culture?

Would you guys like to see groups be featured?

Also, SDCC is coming up (yes I plan WAY ahead!) and what would you guys like to see come from that? Do you want me to interview a couple of outstanding costumes while I’m there or would you like me to do a large photo gallery so you can see everything I see?

Anyway, I hope to hear back from a couple of you at least. Any input would be great! Thanks guys!

Well, apparently somebody wants them to be real so badly that they went and created some Portal mirrors for their bedroom. I find it kind of odd you would place them so close together like this but at least it makes for a cool effect.

Personally, I would have one next to my bed with the other end coming out at the refrigerator. Perhaps I love food a little too much which might be why I have issues losing weight. Regardless, I want these awesome Portal mirrors!

Here at GEN we know where the root of our geekiness started. For most of us it was at a very young age where videogames were 8bit and everyone had to have a pair of moonboots. So when we run across 8bit crafts it holds near and dear to us. This week we speak to Pixlshpr, who has many 8bit felt collages based off of our favoite videogame franchises.

How long have you been felting?
I began making my felt collages back in fall 2009.

What made you want to do felted pixel videogame art?
The idea really came out of my desire to keep busy and do something with my hands. A close friend of mine was opening a shop in Dover, NH called Lucy’s Art Emporium (you can see her Etsy storefront here) and I wanted to contribute and make some things that she could sell. I live in a small Brooklyn apartment, so I started thinking about what I could produce in a limited amount of studio space that would be fun, appealing, and easily contained. Eventually I settled on the idea of making video game fan art. My father, brother and I started playing video games back in the ’80s when my dad bought us our first Nintendo, and we all still play. I really like researching the history of the games for the pieces I make.

What is your favorite videogame series?
I am very loyal to the Nintendo brand, and the games I have enjoyed playing the most over the years are those in the Legend of Zelda series. In particular, I think the Zelda games for the Wii and Gamecube have really wonderful character design and gameplay. I tend to prefer games that are designed to look more like cartoon animation, rather than the realism you see in a lot of games today. The Mario games are great too of course–I’ve spent more hours playing the numerous versions of Mario Kart than I could possibly estimate! I also have a fondness for a quirky GameCube game called Cubivore, and Conker’s Bad Fur Day for Nintendo 64. I love RPGs and Secret of Mana is one of my favorites. As for arcade games, Crystal Castles tops my list.

Do you make custom orders?
I certainly do! Over half a dozen of the items in my Etsy shop are the result of custom orders. Depending on the era the game comes from, the availably of reference material, and the colors used, I can usually come up with something if a person has a special request. Many people have a favorite game from their childhood that they would love to see put on canvas. I’ve made pieces for games that I’ve never even played myself.

How long does it take to make an average felted pixel piece?
Taking into consideration the amount of time I need to cut the felt, the size of the piece, and the number of colors in the scene, it can take me anywhere from a half an hour to three and a half hours to make one felt collage. Putting them together is very therapeutic for me–not unlike playing video game for a few hours every once in a while!

Thank you very much Pixlpshr for speaking with us and explaining a bit of your process and passion for these collages. Pixlpshr has other pixel creations in their store if you are not huge into the videogame collages. It also sounds like you can get a custom collage pretty easily if you don’t see what you are looking for. From the price to the quality, anyone who buys one of these is going to be a happy customer.
